This
course reviews basic and specialized medical terminology. Terminology
is explained in context using case studies related to the most common
diagnoses per body system. The workbook will provide participants with
additional exercises, examples, and resources that can be used for
independent review of medical terminology.
Each case study
includes presentation, anatomy, symptoms, diagnostics and procedures,
medical equipment, treatments and medications, and medical specialties
related to each body system.
1. Cardiovascular System: Myocardial
Infarction, PTCA, CABG. The Emergency Department. 2.
Musculoskeletal System: Orthopedics (Herniated Disc, joint replacement
and fractures). Burns. 3. Gastrointestinal System: Abdominal pain
(gastritis; appendicitis, laparoscopy, abdominal surgery) 4.
Endocrine System: Diabetes, Insulin, nutrition counseling, bariatrics 5.
Neurovascular System and Sensory Impairments: Stroke, spinal cord
injury and rehabilitation. 6. Respiratory System: Tuberculosis.
Pneumonia. Respiratory Failure (The Intensive Care Unit, ventilator
support) 7. Renal and Reproductive System: Case Study: Prostate and
Kidney disease. Pregnancy and Delivery. 8. Oncology and the Immune
System: Cancer terminology. HIV/AIDS. The infectious process and
isolation precautions. Skin conditions.
About The Presenter
 Marlene V. Obermeyer, RN, MA,
is a registered nurse and a cultural competency advocate. She is the
IMIA representative for the state of Kansas. Ms. Obermeyer is an
experienced continuing education provider for nurses with emphasis on
cultural competency and cross-cultural communication. A certified
eLearning instructor, she has designed and authored over 100 contact
hours of online continuing education courses. She is the founder and
director of Culture Advantage, a provider of continuing nursing
education and medical interpreter training. Originally from the
Philippines, Ms. Obermeyer has over 20 years of nursing experience in
the U.S. Her nursing experience includes positions in medical-surgical,
cardiovascular, intensive care, bone-marrow transplant, spinal cord
injury, rehabilitation, geriatric and psychiatric units, and case
management in rural and metropolitan medical facilities. She obtained a
Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies, (with concentrations in
anthropology, communication and international business) from Wichita
State University in Kansas. Ms. Obermeyer is approved as a CNE provider
by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. She is a member and webmaster of
the Kansas Association of Nursing Continuing Education Providers.
