The Culture Advantage programs are designed by healthcare professionals to prepare interpreters for the acute care setting. Acute care means hospitals and medical centers where your medical knowledge in both languages is critical. In addition, you will be very well prepared for interpreting in primary care and community health settings. Working closely with professional medical interpreters and CMI/CHIs, healthcare professionals continue to improve the program to provide the most relevant learning experiences for medical interpreters.

Strong Foundation in Medical Concepts in Both Languages

We want medical interpreters with a strong foundation in medical concepts, not just anatomy and medical terminology, but have a good understanding of the disease process, of the most common diagnoses, treatments, and procedures that they would encounter in the hospital setting.

First, you will learn medical concepts in English. This is the foundation of the medical interpreter program.

Next, you will apply the concepts that you have learned in English into understanding and explaining medical concepts in the non-English language.

Third, you will apply what you have learned in the first two parts of the program when you go to the Professional Medical Interpreting Skills Section. You will learn how to adhere to the standards of practice, code of ethics and role boundaries of a medical interpreter while interpreting with accuracy in both languages. You will have plenty of listening exercises, simultaneous interpreting, sight translation exercises, and consecutive interpreting exercises.

Results: Well-rounded Professional Medical Interpreter who has been trained and tested in both languages.

After successfully completing Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3, you would be ready to take the Comprehensive Final Evaluation (CFE). The CFE is where you would put all the knowledge and skills together during a live simulation of a clinically-authentic scenario where you will be interpreting between a medical provider and a patient.
