Meet Kelly Martinkus, MD, CMI-Spanish.
Kelly Lyn Martinkus MD, CMI-Spanish is a Senior Mentor and the Manager of Program Development-Medical Division at Culture Advantage.
Dr. Martinkus brings a wealth of experience from both the medical and medical interpreting fields. She studied medicine in the International Program at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico where she received a bilingual, bicultural medical education. She completed her medical internship training at HIMA San Pablo, Caguas in Puerto Rico. She holds certification from both the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and the National Board for Certification of Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).
Having learned medicine in English and Spanish, Dr. Martinkus is able to provide students with a unique perspective of advanced medical terminology in both languages. She feels strongly that bilingual healthcare professionals play a vital role in medical interpreter training because they have the ability to create realistic, medically-accurate, clinically relevant role-play scenarios and provide language-specific feedback to medical interpreters. Furthermore, Dr. Martinkus maintains that healthcare providers have a unique view of medical terminology and can provide medical interpreters with insight to the medical field that goes far beyond linguistics.
She is a member of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and is an advocate for language specific medical interpreter training with bilingual healthcare provider involvement as a way to ensure quality patient care for limited English proficiency patients. Dr. Martinkus has an interest in pediatrics, international medicine, and medical anthropology and enjoys combining her love of medicine, language, and culture through medical interpreter training.
